Canoe Trip and Barbecue
— Saturday, June 2, 2012 —

Long ago, horse-drawn barges plied the Nissequogue River delivering supplies to the town of Smithtown. On Saturday, June 2nd, those looking for the fun of repeating history can relive this time on a canoe trip down the town’s peaceful river.  Canoers and kayakers will be able to enjoy the same wildlife - egrets, swans, wildflowers and lush vegetation - that have been a natural part of the river for generations.

The event includes a catered barbecue, and live music by guitarist Norman Vincent. During the entertainment part of the event, Smithtown resident Peter Paquette, a member of the Friends group since it was founded in 2000, will receive the Friends of Caleb Smith Preservation Award. The award was established seven years ago to recognize individuals, or groups for their efforts in the conservation and preservation of historical structures, the local natural environment or that of the larger community.

The Canoe Trip Benefit on the Nissequogue River is coordinated and sponsored by two of the town’s preservation groups: the Friends of Caleb Smith Preserve and the Smithtown Historical Society, which share a goal of preserving Smithtown’s historic structures on their respective properties, and hold educational programs and events regarding the town’s history.
