What's Happening Now

•  Park Manager, Clarence Ware, will be honored with the first annual, Long Island Conservationist Award by the Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited at their 31st Annual National Conservation Banquet at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho, NY on March 2, 2012.  Check out the LITU website for details.

•  A unique interactive exhibit on the cultural, geological and topographical history of the property containing the Preserve has been installed in the Nature Museum.

•  The  “Rotting Log” exhibit for the Forest Room of the Nature Museum has been completed

 •  We're seeking recommendations for guest speakers for a planned lecture series to be held at the Park.  The talks should be related to the Preserve in some way, and may cover a wide range of topics from wildlife and nature preservation, habitat improvement, natural and cultural history of Long Island, the Preserve and surrounding areas, or anything else that would be of interest to conservation-minded audiences.  If you have some suggestions, please contact us at calebfriends@aol.com. 

•  Report of New York State Parks Friends Groups Meeting:
Sponsor: Alliance for New York State Parks
Date/Place: October 14, 2011; Planting Fields State Historic Park, Old Westbury.
FCSP Representative: Peter Paquette
Purpose of Meeting: For Friends groups to exchange ideas and information with each other, elected and park officials.
Presenters: Erik Kulleseid, Alliance for NYS Parks Director; Robin Dropkin, Parks & Trails, Executive Director; Tom Alworth, Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservations, Deputy Commissioner.
Peter Paquette Summary - Issues conveyed by NYS Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey:
— Keep parks and facilities open with less money and staff; objective of the commission is to keep the parks open, to increase the parks’ profile and reinvent efficiency.
— Deepen visitors experiences including exhibits, activities, programming, interns and student conservation activities, working with park management and staff.
— Repair infrastructure through capital projects, prioritize and work with private sector, importance of communication with state officials and agencies.
Ms. Harvey stressed the need for help from Friends groups.
Suggestion: Have Friends groups hold meetings, get together and brainstorm on their own level
